As an industry, we often get caught up in the new technologies which will enable the last mile of 5G. Approaching Mobile World Congress (MWC), a show where the “new car smell” wafts from the halls, it’s important to remember what important to the foundations of 5G - the flexibility of a multi-vendor network. It’s with that in mind that Lumina Networks and VMware are partnering to bring the flexibility of NFV and programmability of SDN to 5G networks.
Next week at the show, VMware and Lumina will demonstrate live 5G Application Placement and edge-to-edge network slicing in heterogeneous networks...from the interference-riddled show floor. With innovation stemming from VMware’s vCloud NFV Platform, Lumina’s OpenDaylight-based SDN Controller and recently announced Lumina Extension & Adaptation Platform, the companies will show how to seamlessly deliver 5G services to subscribers, enterprises and MVNOs with a single network architecture. Unifying control across the Service Provider WAN, cloud, edge, backhaul and access networks, the co-developed innovation creates network intelligence to effectively place context-aware applications and generate edge-to-edge network slices.
The demonstration will show how application components are placed throughout a distributed data center network based on real-time conditions to optimized service performance and network efficiencies. To extend the value of application placement, the joint innovation creates edge-to-edge network slices by interconnecting the core data center and the Service Provider WAN.
The success of Lumina Networks’ SD-Core deployments have proven that heterogeneous network control can reduce costs and increase efficiencies of heterogeneous networks. Their leadership in the open source community and dedication to delivering vendor-agnostic networking solutions to the market extends the benefits of VMware’s virtualization excellence. Together, we will accelerate the digital transformation, enabling Service Providers to create new 5G business models.
A recent conversation from IHS analyst Michael Howard highlighted the importance of this innovation.“From our IHS Markit global research, operators tell us that network slicing is critical for 5G applications, and yet, end-to-end hybrid slicing across physical/virtual and fixed/mobile networks is still a major technical challenge.” Michael continued, “Operators also require flexibility in where to locate their 5G apps—from the core out to the many edges closer to end-users. They are looking for software that will support these requirements across the many network domains and layers as well as fit into their automation schemes.”
